The pattern uses 3 charm packs (you can also use scrappy charms) and 4 yards of a background fabric. I loved creating this new design and can't wait to see your version. It's simple and comes together quickly so pull out a stack of your favorite charm packs and preorder your copy of the book so that you can get started as soon as it arrives.

Riding the Rails - a new published pattern

I'm way behind on posting including another big announcement.
I've got another new pattern published. It's in the newly released Rolling Along from Moda Bake Shop and Martingale Publishing.
The designers have been/are hosting giveaways to share the news of this great new book. Due to my hectic schedule during Girl Scout cookie season (which is now, thankfully, done for this year), I've missed sharing the news (so sorry), but you can still enter Jen Daly's giveaway on Instagram at @jendalyquilts which ends tomorrow, June 10th.

I'll be posting my giveaway on IG on Saturday, June 11th, and the entries will close on Tuesday the 14th.  You won't want to miss entering for a chance to win not only the book but a kit to make my quilt.  There will also be a 2nd prize of both this book and the earlier released book.

Stay tuned!

Did Someone Say Cake? Giveaway

The Giveaway is closed. Congratulations Needled Mom!  I'll be contacting you shortly.

The copies of the new book Did Someone Say Cake? arrived so it's time for a giveaway to celebrate.  I'm giving away one autographed copy.

It's a fabulous compilation of 12 gorgeous quilt patterns by talented designers.  I am humbled and honored to be included in this book.

This is my design, Jeweled Diamonds.

It's a beautiful, bright quilt that finished at 72 1/2" x 80 1/2" which is perfect for snuggling up under during the wet and chilly days of late winter and early spring.  It was a overcast, damp day when I took this picture, so here's a picture from the book to show that it's much brighter in real life.

To enter the giveaway:

1) Follow me

2) Leave a comment telling me who is your favorite fabric designer.

P.S. Please make sure you are not a No Comment Blogger because if you win, I won't be able to contact you.

That's it!  Easy, peasy.

I'll make someone's Valentine's Day even better by announcing the winner that evening so the giveaway will close Monday, February 14th at 5pm EST.

For another chance to win, I'm hosting a giveaway for a 2nd book over on Instagram.  You can find me at @crayonboxquiltstudio.

Sneak Peak!

Today I'm sharing a little sneak peak of the quilt I made for the upcoming book "Did Someone Say Cake?" being released next month and available at Shop Martingale.

These are the gorgeous fabrics I used. The batik colors are so rich and vibrant and the prints are the perfect scale, in my opinion.

The fabric line is Malibu Batiks and it's currently available from a huge number of quilt shops, but don't wait to get your stash. I expect it will sell out quickly.
Here's the last sneak peak I can share until the book is released.  I know, it's a little bit of torture to not show you more, but this will have to suffice until next month when I can share more.
As you can guess, I can't wait to get this book in my hands.  I would guess that there will be a few or more projects created by the other designers that I will want to make too.

Big News! My 1st Published pattern!

How would you react if you received an email from the Content Director at Martingale Publishing asking if you'd like to contribute a new quilt pattern for an upcoming book?

Surprised? Shocked? Excited? Jaw dropped to the floor? All of these and more?

That was me in October 2020 when that email arrived in my inbox.

I'm excited and humbled to announce that my first in print published pattern appears in Moda Bake Shop's Did Someone Say Cake? which arrives on book stands in February.
In the coming weeks, I'll be sharing a few sneak peaks of the fabric line I used and the quilt I designed for this book. I'll also share a little of the "behind the scenes" so you get an idea of what this process was like.

As you can imagine, I can't wait to get my hands on the book and see my quilt in print for real.

Winter Frost Wall Hanging, Table Runner and Placemats

In December 2020 I participated as one of the Chefs for Moda's Countdown to Christmas Quilt Along.  This year's theme was Winter Frost and the fabrics chosen where a mix of prints and Moda Grunge in Ice Blue, Royal Blue, Aqua and White.

While designing blocks for these events, I've come to the decision that I don't want to end up with random blocks that get put away, never to be seen again.  I didn't have time to make the entire quilt so I chose to make a wall hanging with a limited number of blocks.
My contributions to the quilt along was this North Winds block which is a version of the Windblown Square block.
My other design is this Winter's Beauty block which is a version of the American Beauty block.
It was fun choosing which of the other block designs to use for the wall hanging and selecting just the right fabrics so that the resulting quilt has a wonderful cool and frosty vibe.  It's perfect displayed on my Vietnamese bamboo textile hanger above the desk which is along the wall between the eat-in area of the kitchen and the great room.  It finished at 36" square.
Originally I wasn't going to do any more than the wall hanging but I fell in love with the Mittens block so a pair was made and a cute table runner was the result.
I picked one of the other blocks to sandwich in the middle of the mittens blocks.  For the panto design, I used Bora Bora which certainly gives the feel of the winter winds blowing.
I just added a variety of rectangle strips to bring the runner to 18" x 42" which is a great size for our smaller kitchen table.
I actually quilted all 3 pieces at the same time by loading the wall hanging to the left on the frame, the place mats in the middle, turned sideways, and the table rummer at the end.  This way, I was able to stitch a full length of the design and all 3 pieces were finished quickly.
During the quilt along, I made a few more blocks as possible additions to the wall hanging that I ended up turning into place mats, which I actually use as table toppers on the end tables in my great room instead of at the dining room table.

I don't know about your crew, but with my luck the minute these went on the table under plates of food would be the minute they ended up stained with pasta sauce.  Nope, not happening!  These aren't going anywhere near the dining table.
I added strips of White to show case the block and then added a print strip to either side to bring them up to 12" x 18".

Each one turned out unique but they also blend together nicely.

Everything was backed with this Blue and White print that I found locally.  It wasn't quite the shade I was looking for but it worked.
I'm really glad I found a way to actually use the blocks I created for the quilt along and now, as a bonus, I have 3 great new pieces to decorate my spaces with after Christmas.
It is odd to leave the holiday wall hanging up way past December and now I don't have to.  Next I guess I'll need to make a few more wall hangings for this spot so that I have quilts to display during other seasons throughout the year.

My Back Porch table runner & Moda's Summer in the Country Quilt Along - Blocks 11-16

I've gotten behind with blog post over the past few weeks for Moda's Summer in the Country Quilt Along so today I'm posting links to blocks 11 through 16.  I'm also sharing what I made with the blocks that I designed for the quilt along.

Patriotic designs speak to me of Summer, not just to celebrate the July 4th holiday.  With my Moonlight and Firefly blocks created for the quilt along, I decided to add one more block and turn it into a table runner for our kitchen table.

The size worked out perfectly for our smaller kitchen table.

I'll admit that initially I wasn't going to add the Ladybug fabric border as I really liked it with the darker Blue outside border, but it wasn't quite as wide as I wanted it so I took the chance.
When I went to quilt this on my longarm, I thought I would naturally use one of the designs that featured stars but whether or not it was because I had recently used star designs a lot for customer quilts, those designs didn't feel right to me.  I chose the Wildflower design and I'm really happy with the way it looks on this table runner.

For the back, I was determined to use up the last bits of the fat quarters of Back Porch fabric that Moda sent to me for this quilt along and I was successful, having to just add a bit of White from my stash.

This table runner has graced our table all summer long and it will be a little sad to put it away but Red, White and Blue really doesn't work well with Fall decor.  I'll look forward to bringing it out next June to welcome back the warmer weather and all that the summer fun that entails.

Here are the links to the rest of the blocks for the quilt along.

Block #11 is Ice Cream Churn designed by Lisa Jo Girodat.

Block #12 is so fun.  It's Blue Ribbon, designed by Anne Wiens.
Next up is block # 13, which is Picnic Star.  It is designed by Susan Vaughn.
It's not summer without some kite flying so block #14 is a perfect block to add to this quilt along.  It is Summer Kites by Lisa Jo Girodat.
The next to the last block is Star Flower, designed by Christine Weld.
And the final block design is Farmhouse Star by Susan Vaughan.

Tomorrow the completed quilts will be revealed on the Moda Bake Shop and you won't want to miss it.  They are simply beautiful.  It's also been a great joy to see all the fabulous blocks that have been shared on the Moda Bake Shop Bakers Facebook group.  I can't wait to see all those blocks sewn together and the gorgeous quilts that have been created.

Participating as one of the designing chefs for this quilt along has been a blast and I'm already thinking of ideas for the next Moda quilt along....the annual Countdown to Christmas.  Stay tuned.

Moda's Summer in the Country Quilt Along - Blocks 1 & 2

The first 2 blocks for Moda's summer quilt along this year, Summer in the Country, are live today.
The Pinwheel Parade block was designed by Susan Vaughn and the instructions are here.
The Moonlight block is the one I designed and the instructions are here.
If you haven't yet seen the setting suggestions, you should check them out.  I love the Grandstand setting by Anne Wiens.  All the details can be found here.
The other setting option, Country Picnic by Lisa Jo Girodat is just as wonderful.  You can get the details for it here.
Part of me wishes I was making the whole quilt but I knew that I didn't have the time for it then.  Instead I've ordered a layer cake of the line when it comes out next month and I'll be sewing up my own summer picnic quilt with this adorable fabric line.

I can't wait to see the blocks as everyone starts to make their own versions.
